Everything in front of you is grown at load time from a single seed — the water, the pads, the stems, the three บัวหลวง blossoms and the dragonflies that patrol them. The surface is one continuous sheet of mathematics: ambient waves layered with up to two dozen live ripples, each one raised by your pointer, a falling raindrop, or a stone of the dock below. Touch the water and the nearest lily pads lean politely out of your way.

Two flowers share one name
Thai calls them both บัว, but they are different plants. The sacred lotus (บัวหลวง, Nelumbo) raises round, unbroken leaves on stiff stems above the surface. The water lily (บัวสาย, Nymphaea) floats her pads flat on the water, each with a single cleft cut toward the centre. Both grow in this pond — look for the slit.
The leaf that refuses water
A lotus leaf never looks wet. Microscopic wax towers hold each raindrop up as a near-perfect sphere, so it rolls off at the slightest tilt — collecting dust as it goes. Engineers call this self-cleaning trick the lotus effect, and it is why the plant that grows from pond mud stays spotless.

The sacred lotus keeps office hours: petals part in the first light, close by early afternoon, and repeat for three days before the pod stands alone. The largest blossom in this pond is waiting on you. Bloom opens it a petal at a time and lets the pollen drift; Rain calls a brief shower and covers the pond in rings.
